How Sol Radiology grew from three radiologists to 45 on CIVIE

In a sponsored feature in Radiology Business, Dave Pearson tells the story of Sol Radiology, a Southern California practice that grew from three radiologists serving one hospital in late 2022 to 45 physicians reading for 25 sites and running three imaging centers of its own.

Growth with better economics

According to the article, Sol improved revenue capture by around 30% over three years and increased RVU efficiency by 60%, meaning its radiologists can read far more studies per shift. Co-leader Krishna Das, MD, sums up the strategy as “placing the right technology in the hands of radiology professionals who are ready, willing and able to use it to its full potential.”

Starting with revenue cycle

Sol began working with Collaborative Imaging, now CIVIE, three years earlier, and at first wanted only revenue cycle management. “Our radiologists started getting paid on time and in full,” says co-leader Megha Gupta, MD. RIS, PACS, VNA, the universal worklist, AI-aided dictation and the zero-footprint viewer followed. Co-leader Rahul Nayyar, MD, says that “nine times out of 10, the implementation was plug and play.”

What changed day to day

The co-leaders describe the suite as an ecosystem that starts with a single sign-on. Highlights from the piece:

• Balanced worklists. Rules distribute studies by subspecialty and workload, with no cherry-picking.
• Built-in communication. Radiologists and technologists reach each other directly, and referring physicians rate reports on a 5-star scale.
• Pay visibility. Radiologists see what they earn per read in real time, which lets Sol tailor compensation models for each radiologist.
• EMR context. API integration pulls relevant clinical information into the read.
• Patient-friendly reports and a patient portal, replacing CDs and giving patients ownership of their images and reports.
• Read from anywhere with the zero-footprint viewer.

Letting radiologists be radiologists

Sol’s leaders credit the CIVIE ecosystem for growing the practice to almost 50 radiologists in under three years. “Eyes on images—that’s always the aim,” says Gupta.
